Relief for Philippines Typhoon Victims

We have all been moved by accounts of the terrible devastation in the Philippines in the wake of the typhoon there.  In addition to our prayers for the people who suffer there, and those who died, we have a desire to help.   This weekend, a second collection with be taken up at all Masses at Saint Bernadette to send aid to these our brothers and sisters in need.  Through the Archdiocese, what we give will go directly to Catholic Relief Services, who has already begun to bring its experience and resources to bear there.

An article in today’s Washington Post addressed this impulse that many of its readers felt, and advised caution about which organization or charity Washingtonians should choose to provide their aid.  Not all aid groups are efficient in conveying the promised aid, that is, much of what is given is lost to administrative or other costs in the organization itself.   Some organizations are deceptive, or outright criminal, in taking most or all of the donations for themselves.  We are blessed to be linked with the longstanding and respected Catholic Relief Services, whose transparency and effectiveness are known worldwide.

If you are unable to place your donation in this weekend’s special collection, you may drop it or send it to the rectory any time in coming weeks, or simply put this additional check along with your regular donation check in any Saint Bernadette collection basket, marked clearly on the Memo line, Hurricane Relief.  We assure you that ALL of your gift will go to this project.  Faith Direct users may also contribute by designating a special gift online.
Yours In Christ,
Msgr. Smith
